Geoff Thomas scored the only goal of the game in the tenth minute to win the game for the home team. Lee Sharp picked up an injury and was replaced by Pierre Laurent, but United also made several other substitutions with Gunnar Halle coming on at Right Back for Gary Kelly, Lee Bowyer replaced David Hopkin at Inside Right, while Rod Wallace was replaced by Derek Lilley, who later gave way to Harry Kewell. Forest made four replacements. In the twelfth minute Craig Armstrong came on for Colin Cooper. Two minutes before half-time Dean Saunders came on for Kevin Campbell. On the hour Steve Stone was brought on in place of Thierry Bonalair and finally with seven minutes on the clock Scot Gemmill replaced Chris Allen.
